IMPHAL, Dec 18 : The Spastics Society of Manipur has called on the state media to highlight the various problems of the physically challenged persons before the people of the state as this could help in the successful implementation of various programmes and projects for the welfare of people with disabilities.
Stating this, Pincha, a senior consultant for human rights and disability during a press conference organised by the Spastics Society of Manipur at the Manipur Press Club in Imphal, said that persons with disabilities should speak out for themselves with the support of civil society organisations.
He said there was need for special attention with equal treatment for the disabled persons of the state so that they realise their real human potential and are able to live life in a proper manner.
He said in a recent convention held in December the United Nations Convention on Rights of Persons with Disabilities made an official declaration for giving equal opportunities irrespective of caste, creed, gender along with no social discrimination, provision for reasonable accomodation for the physically challenged persons, special reservation of seats in the UPSC/state service examinations.
He said following the recent Un declaration on disabilities the charter should be followed in special category states like Manipur where many social problems disturb even the normal people.
The talents and skills of the disabled people of the state are already known in the country as the Spastics Society of Manipur had received the national award for best institution recently, he said while expressing the immediate need for extending awareness to every corner of the state for the upliftment of disabled persons.
