Farmers picket Erabot's house

Taking strong exception against the State Government's plan to set up an industrial growth centre at Chingarel after taking over 800 acres of agricultural land, a large number of villagers from Waiton and surrounding areas picketed the residence of Industry Minister Y Erabot at Porompat today.

The villagers belonging to Waiton, Sawombung, Phaknung, Mani Yaiskul, Mani Ingkhol, Chingarel Tezpur, Sangomshang, Khurai Konsam Leikai, Khurai Chaithabi etc, most of whom are cultivators, came to the Minister's residence this morning and staged a protest demonstration at the Minister's gate.

Even as the villagers clarified that they were there to submit a memorandum to the Minister against the Government's plan of setting up industrial growth centre at Chingarel, police pushed them back till Porompat PDA complex.

However, some of the protesters were allowed to submit their memorandum to the Industry Minister's staff as Y Erabot was not at home at the time.

Secretary of the Waiton Mamang Chingarel Loukon Kanba Lup S Chandrakumar said that the villagers have already offered land available between Phaknung and Kangla which is not fit for agricultural purposes in place of Chingarel agricultural land for the industrial growth centre.

Reminding that the villagers had asked the Government to retract its plan by December last year, Chandrakumar conveyed about the villagers' decision to continue their anti-agricultural land acquisition campaign under all circumstances.

They also asked the Government not to make Chingarel another Nandigram.
