Manipuris in Meghalaya border to fight for rights

Imphal, Jan 14 : All Manipur Students' Union (AMSU) has taken up steps to improve the life and lot of the Manipuri people settled in the interior parts of Meghalaya state bordering Bangladesh.

General Secretary of AMSU Headquarter, Premananda Tongbram today stated in a press release that as part of the AMSU's consistent effort to bring together the Manipuri people settled in different parts of India, a joint team of various students bodies comprising the president of Khasi Students' Union (KSU), Publicity and Information Secretary of North Eastern Students' Organisation (NESO), Samuel Jyrwa, President of Shillong Manipuri Students' Union (SMSU),

Th Suresh, Advisor SMSU, Surjit Thokchom and Assistant General Secretary of NESO, who is also the former Vice President of AMSU, Jamesbond Mangang went to the villages located in the interior areas of Meghalaya state bordering Bangladesh where Manipuri people are settled.

A public meeting was held there yesterday which discussed ways and means to improve the standard of living of the Manipuris and make them enjoy various rights including right to vote as enshrined in the constitution of India.

KSU President, Samuel Jyrwa expressed his conviction that the Manipuri people settled there ought to exercise the right to vote and also the right to owned land.

He also assured that the KSU would do everything possible to make this rights available to the Manipuri settlers.

He said that we need to join hands as one.

The meeting also resolved to form an organisation of the Manipuri settlers there to pursue to achieve their rights.
