Imphal, April 3 : Normal life was affected in many parts of Manipur today in response to a 24-hour general strike that began at midnight last night.
The strike was called in protest against the Okram Ibobi Singh government’s failure to take into custody the NSCN (Isak-Muivah) cadres who killed subdivisional officer Thingnam Kishan and his two subordinate staff in February.
Shops remained closed in valley districts, including Imphal city, and transport services were suspended throughout the state.
There was no report of any strike-related violence.
In the meantime, the Centre has extended the Delhi Special Police Establishment Act to the whole of Manipur, paving the way for a CBI probe into the case. The ministry of personnel issued the notification on March 24 and sent a copy to the state government yesterday.
The Imphal bench of Gauhati High Court passed an order yesterday, asking the government to submit a progress report of the investigation into the case within four weeks.
