Imphal | May 22 : Effigy of Manipur Chief Minister, O Ibobi Singh has been burnt by the irate locals of Singjamei area in Imphal who are protesting against the killing of a local youth by the combined security forces allegedly after having had arrested the person on May 18. The traffic along the Indo-Myanmar section of the NH-39 was disturbed for the day owing to the dawn to dusk Singjamei Kendra general strike/bandh imposed from 6 am to 6 pm of Thursday by the locals against the killing of the youth identified as one L Satish.
The effigy of chief minister O Ibobi Singh was burnt by the protesting people on the streets at Kakwa at around 11 am today. While making 'bonfire' of the effigy, the protestors also shouted various slogans against the chief minister terming him as “master of killers” Despite the police efforts, the normal traffic on the portion of the highway from Kakwa to Singjamei Super Market could not be resumed to normalcy.
All shops and other establishments across the Singjamei area including market places on the sides of the highway remained closed for the day showing solidarity to the demand put forward by the local people. The Joint Action Committee (JAC) on the Killing of L Satish has called the 12-hour general strike in the entire Singjamei Kendra effective from 6 am till 6 pm. of Thursday. Essential services were exempted from the purview of the bandh.
