Imphal, June 9 : Manipur karatekas bagged eight medals, including three gold, in the 25th All India Karate Do Championship held in Uttarkhand last month.
Panthoi Pangambam won two gold medals in the sub-junior boys kumite and kata, while in the cadet boys’ 55-kg category, Kh. Jiban Singh took a gold in kumite. In the junior’s 50kg, N. Dhamendra Singh won a silver medal while N. Kuber Singh took a silver in kumite.
S. Bidyalata Devi grabbed a silver in the sub-junior girls’ category, while S. Sarda Devi got a bronze medal.
In the cadet girl’s 47kg category, A.K. Sunita Devi won a bronze, giving Manipur a total of three gold, three silver and two bronze medals.
Chess meet ends
Lions Kamrupa-Nepal Chess Federation Friendship Matches Series, organised by the Lions Kamrupa Chess Academy and hosted by Lions Club of Guwahati South, concluded at South Point School here on Saturday, reports our staff reporter from Guwahati.
The tournament was part of the academy’s annual students’ exchange programme. The event was supported by Sarala Birla Gyan Jyoti and South Point School. The players were provided food by South Point School.
A 16-member team, comprising students of Sarala Birla Gyan Jyoti and South Point School, will visit Kathmandu in July. The academy will send a clutch of youngsters and the schools associated with it to Nepal, Thailand, Sri Lanka and Poland on exposure trips. Chess trainees and players from there will be hosted by the academy.
In the closing ceremony the speakers stressed the need for the introduction of chess at school level for all-round development of the students.
Lion Binod Khemka said an exposure tour to Bangkok would be organised very soon.
The second Jugal Kishore Newatia Tournament would also be held in September, he said.
