Imphal, Feb 21 : The indefinite curfew in Imphal and greater Imphal areas, clamped on Thursday in the wake of the killing of a sub divisional officer, was relaxed for two hours from 1 p m on Saturday following improvement in the law and order situation.
Official sources said the curfew relaxation, which will cover areas in both Imphal East and West districts where it was clamped, was made to allow people buy essential items.
The curfew was imposed in the twin districts following large scale agitation in the wake of the killing of the sub divisional officer Th Kishan and his two staff members by suspected hill-based militants on February 17 in Senapati district, sources said.
Several social organisations in Manipur valley had called a 48-hour general strike from February 17 midnight to protest the gruesome killing of the three men, killed on way to Ukhrul and their bludgeoned bodies later found in neighbouring Senapati district.
The three officials had been kidnapped from the gate of deputy commissioner's office at Ukhrul on February 13 and their bodies were found in Senapati on February 17.
