MSCW chairperson calls for more support from police

IMPHAL, Feb 1 : Due to absence of any help in the works of the commission by the state police force many cases taken up by the commission have come to a halt, said Dr. Ch Jamini, chairperson of the Manipur State Commission for Women at a press meet held today at the commission office at Lamphelpat in Imphal.

She further stated that out of many cases which came to the commission some cases were easily solved by them but in some other cases the accused did not show up even after summons. In this matter, with the help of the police the defaulting persons can be caught after issuing warrants, she averred.

In such cases the police didn`t help the commission and instead some police personnel asked whether the commission had the right to use police force, she said adding that in other states the commission had full support from the police force while it was not so for the Manipur State Commission for Women.

Due to this reason many complicated cases including four rape cases were pending. On the other hand, the annual report of various activities of the commission and recommendations were submitted to the government but unfortunately out of 40 recommendations submitted not a single recommendation was taken up by the government, she said.

The commission has put up all their activities on their website www.Manipur Women Commission.org and all can surf the web and give comments, she said while stating that empowering women was not to be done only in paper and words but has to be practical.

In a meeting held at the chief secretary`s office room on January 29 regarding a new strategy for speedy socio-economic empowerment of women by the President Pratibha Patil, women`s issues on sensitization of police and gender budgeting were discussed, she said.

She also urged all the officers/directors of departments in Manipur to give the unused budgets of their departments to the commission, at the meeting.
